What I've learnt about God:
While men and women are equal, wives are called to submit to their husbands, and all are called to submit to their rulers. It's not an irrelevant rule.
What I've learnt about me:
Looking at it from a modern perspective it seems a bit harsh to cast her off because she didn't come, but in the days everyone had to obey the king's every whim, so I guess it was more normal, and it allowed God to work strongly.
