What I've learnt about God:
He does everything so that He can give mercy to those who ask for it, and lavish His grace upon them, whether Jew or Gentile.
What I've learnt about me:
Grace not works is such an important thing to remember, so you don't get legalistic and think "I've done x, y and z therefore I'm saved." You are saved through Christ and Christ alone.
